WinRAR archiváló program, amely nem csak minden népszerű tömörítő formátumot tud kezelni, hanem saját formátuma is van.
A .RAR fájlok általában 8 vagy 15 %-al több tartalmat tudnak tömöríteni, mint a ZIP vagy ARJ fájlok.
WinRAR erőssége a normál és multimédia fájlok tömörítése és a nem RAR archívok, mint ZIP, ACE, CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, BZ2, UUE, JAR, ISO, 7Z és Z.
Továbbá a szoftver támogatja a hosszú fájl neveket és programozó önkiterjesztés archívok (SFX), sérült archív javítás, hitelesség ellenőrzés, beágyazott fájl kommentek és adatvédelmi kódolás.    methods, particularly when packing large numbers of small files.
